I would say a good tip is to buy those beginner books. They teach you some basic chords and songs and stuff to give you a general feel of the guitar. By learning these simple songs it helps you with getting used to chord changes.

Take lessons from a guitar player I guess? Or you can go to the store, get some partitions for beginners, and some beginners' tutorials and stuff.

Thats kind of the great debate. If your a self motivator then no real need for lessons the internet has most of the information you'll need, coupled with the beginner books. Personally I took lessons I did much better with a teacher. I still take from him but have cut back now I only do it in the summers because I dont have enough time with college and can teach myself a good bit.
Other than that just stick with it. You were inspired to pick it up for some reason. If your like me that reason was a song or a band. Learn some of that bands stuff to start it helps foster a love of it imo.

I agree, different people have different learning abilities. I learned from a book, but some need a teacher

I would say start with a teacher, even if its just a few lessons just to get you started and then teach yourself further on. Just to get the technique right. It's better to learn the correct technique from the beginning than to try and get rid of a bad habit you developed.

I've just been using Youtube to learn songs so far but it isn't actually helping me learn to play the guitar, yes i may know how to play a few easy songs but i don't really know how to play. Thanks for the advice folks, i've decided to get some books from my local music store. I'll just go back to basics and start again PROPERLY this time Smile

You can try mixing both the books and a video if you don't want to hire a teacher for lessons.

It really depends on the person, and their determination. I taught myself via book, I'm sure there's others out there who did the same.

Me too, I had been learning guitar as a self-tought for the last 3 years.

Maybe is a good idea see a teacher (or someone who knows about it) for the first week in order to avoid a bad position or something like that:

But yes, it depends on the determination.

Here you can see one of my videos so you can see my performance as self-taught:

Stick with it! Make sure you pick up your guitar at least 5 minutes a day no matter what even if you suck. The more you play the easier your hands will become comfortable. Also youtube Marty Schwartz.
