*waits for someone to bitch because they're Nu and Alternative Metal*

I recently started getting into these guys.

I have White Pony and Around the Fur.

Any other recommendations?

I like them. They've always done something complete different and stuck to it no matter what the current trends are. I find their music very trippy. You should give their latest album a listen to Diamond Eyes (2010).

I'll look into that one.

I kind of like the singer's voice, especially that high note in Digital Bath.

They gave me more ideas for writing some of my music, especially throwing ambient sounds into my songs.

I don't see Deftones as numetal. They did get big around the time numetal did and they used to have similar elements. Deftones are just fantastic, though. One of the very few bands I haven't grown out of over the past 10+ years.

I think it's because of their first 2 albums, they kind of came away from that scene.

Most certainly.
Huge fan of theirs still. Sad situation about Chi, though.

Well their bass player Chi Cheng got into a severe car accident a few years ago and he's still bed ridden. He's only partially awake recently and able to respond to very basic commands (such as "raise your right hand"). Terrible situation. =/
He has lost so much weight as well. It's frightening.

So I just got Self Titled and Saturday Night Wrist. I'll respond back on my opinion of these laters.

I'm glad you like them so far. They are actually timeless for me, they will always stay relevant to me.

Yeah, I listened to both of them. I really enjoyed them.

I'm curious why I never heard of them until recently.

I'll be honest, i'm not really a fan. I've only heard their singles but they haven't really done anything for me, maybe i would prefer them if i listened to an album.

Deftones are 100% an album band. All of Chino's influences are bands that are also album bands as opposed to singles ones (Smashing Pumpkins with Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie, The Cure with their earlier work, My Bloody Valentine)
The thing is Deftones are actually against writing songs to be singles. Back to School was the first time they ever took this approach, and it was their way of saying "fuck you, label, we can make a hit if we want to and we don't want to". They took another song of theirs (Pink Maggit) and turned it into a radio hit. It became their first big smash, as they predicted. That's why their "singles" never seem like singles. Definitely check out an album or two in full.

Self-titled is great. My favorite Deftones album for sure.

I've heard they're a really lackluster live show, can anyone confirm? I don't want it to be true... Sad

From what I've seen, lately Chino kind of has a hard time hitting most of the notes and kind of spits and sputters. Unless Lollapalooza 2012 was just a bad day.

I was pissed watching Digital Bath. It wasn't the band's fault, the sound guy thought it was an ingenious idea to not turn on Chino's mic AND guitar up until like the second verse.

It's not technical enough for you...? Wink I like their trippy post-nu metal sound. It's sexy.

How's the new album though?

I really like it because the whole album has a nice flow to it. It's not a album that I appreciated the first time I listened to it, but you have to listen to it 2 times to get into it.

It's like a 5second girl: When you look at her at first glance she is pretty average but the longer you look at her the more you realise how beautiful she actually is. She might be someone you would miss on the street if you haven't stopped to look at her properly compared to your "instant" beauties.
