Baroness-Yellow and Green Baroness-YellowGreen-Artwork

Rating: 4.6/5

Baroness are interesting, because they always seem to do the opposite of what people want whilst being very good at it. Did people really want another sludge metal band? Not really, but Baroness released their debut anyways, and you know what? People loved it. When people wanted another Red Album, you know what Baroness did? They released their Blue Record, of course, which was softer and less filthy sounding, and you know what? That album was even better. So, now we have Yellow and Green: A double disc that may not even be a metal one. The leaked singles have been an indication of this, but those were all from Yellow and not from Green. The best part? Yellow is the heavier side of the two.

This is probably the last thing fans wanted. Not just an even softer album, but two of them, and you know what? It may very well be their best.

The album can be comparable to folk albums of the past, specificaly Dylan's Blonde on Blonde, not by quality but by song writing and structure and intent. The only difference here is that the songs aren't really intertwined but separated. The more upbeat, story based songs are on Yellow (with Back Where I Belong talking about the past the narrator longs for), and the more melodic, mystical tracks are on Green. That's not to say that neither side has its explosive moments or climaxes, which of course they do. Unlike their past albums where you can usually expect a punching resolution in the middle of a song, the punches are sporadic and usually unpredictable on Yellow and Green, thus making them much more of an impact.

The album can also be compared to the progressive bands of the early days, especially the 70's, where bands like Yes and Emerson, Lake and Palmer would create large landscapes and textures with their instruments in such a significant way. You could tell it was either of those bands from a mile away, and now, Baroness can be spotted from afar with their own psychedelic walls of sound. I really feel that it is necessary to point out how difficult it is to create a luscious wave of sound with tremelo picking, and yet Baroness get the job done. These are, of course, on top of rolling drum hits and crunchy bass, so the fact that they pulled this off is even more surprising.

The best part of this album, and what I feel is the final point that elevates it up and above their past releases, is that both sides, together and separate, feel like a cohesive unit. Of course, Red Album and Blue Record did as well, but each song bled into one another on those. On Yellow and Green, you have specific moments where a member of the band will face the silence between tracks to count down the next song through a haunting whisper. Not only does the album feel much more organic this way and less like a forceful project (you MUST listen to the whole album for certain songs to work), but each song ends up working so well on their own as well as within the entire picture.

Yellow and Green is a strong and risky effort that definitely paid off. This is exactly what you can expect a front running band to be able to pull off, and this was the ultimate test to see whether or not the band were truly one of the best, if not the best, at their genre. Much like Mastodon and their album Crack the Skye, Yellow and Green is a new look at what can constitute as a metal album. Whether or not you think it is, in the end, a metal album, why should that even matter? The fact of the matter is that it is currently one of the top albums of the year, and if you are going to skip this album just because it isn't "heavy", then that's your own loss. For those who want to open their minds like the members of Baroness have, Yellow and Green will be mostly rewarding and will serve as a memorable journey that will most definitely carry itself until the end of the year, making it easy to reflect on its importance within the hard rock world in 2012.

Yeah I've been listening to it for a while. Hasn't aged. In fact, it's even more memorable now. Metal album of the year so far for me.
