Tommy Stinson - One Man Mutiny Tommy_stinson_one_man_mutiny_cover

Tommy Stinson is not that familiar of a name, but he was the bassist to the legendary Alternative band, The Replacements, and is currently hired by Axel Rose as the bassist for the current incarnation of Guns N Roses. After playing with GnR and recording Chinese Democracy, Stinson decided to record a solo album. Village Gorrilla head will probably be saved for a different time, but let's say that the songwriting on One Man Mutiny is a better crafted, and more of a consistent album.

You won't hear much Guns N Roses influences in this album, but if you're a Replacements fan, you can hear a bit of influences from his former bandmate Paul Westerberg (who even makes an appearance in the album) leaks throughout the album. Like the final 2 Mats albums, Stinson tries a concoction of jangle pop and power pop to present his sound. Like many Westerberg's solo albums, Stinson mixes around acoustic ballads and crunchy guitar songs between each other, so the album itself never gets dull. The lyrics are tend to be a mix of being a bit of self depreciating and depressing but they're mixed with some upbeat music, so unless you're paying attention, you wouldn't notice the album can feel a bit depressing. Come to Hide is a bit of a melancholy song, but the horns in the bridge does feel a bit more uplifting, so you won't feel as depressed as listening to an Alice in Chains album.

Vocalwise, it seems like Stinson's singing has gotten better with age. His first singing attempt was a rarity called Satellite and his voice is a bit more nasally and squeaky, but a good 20 something years later, his voice has gotten deeper and more mature and this is the current result of his voice. Several of the songs have bonus backing vocals from his wife, which is a nice touch to the songs.

All in all, if you're looking for more work from The Replacements, Tommy Stinson is the place to look. As a great alternative if you're looking for the Mats' sound but tired of Westerberg (let's hope not)

4/5
